There’s no other explanation for the events leading up to Tuesday’s one-game playoff with the Detroit Tigers: The home team’s building still has some magic left. I propose for one night the ‘Dome be referred to as or renamed the “Harry H. Houdini Metrodome”, because the Twins are the first team in the history of Major League Baseball to escape a 3-game deficit in the standings with 4 left to play.
I’d like to say that I wish the Twins would take care of all this stuff (division title, etc…) before the last game of the season, but these are our Twins I guess, and if nothing else, they always make it interesting.
By the way, this is probably the biggest weekend in Minnesota sports since 1987 or 1991, and the ‘Dome is at the forefront. Last Twins’ games ever in the middle of pennant race, that Favre guy playing for the VIKINGS against the PACKERS on Monday Night Football. This is epic, and a whole lot of fun to watch and be a part of if you’re a Minnesota sports fan.
Needless to say, the Twins have obliged me up to this point with my requests last week to “Win or Go Home” and coincidentally, they are playing their best baseball of the season at its most important point, without one of their key cogs in First Baseman Justin Morneau.
His replacement at first, Michael Cuddyer, has been clutch (which I’ve called him out about not being in the past), and Delmon Young is tearing the cover off the ball to help pick up the slack.
The Twins are going to send out Scott Baker, who is 6-2 over his last 10 starts, in this year’s one-game playoff to face the Tigers’ Rick Porcello (a Rookie).
Just got my tickets for the 4:00 PM Do-or-Die tilt tomorrow afternoon, and can’t wait to see all my Twins friends there cheering them to victory with me. (Someone should have a Decibel meter going in the dome for the next 2 nights, its going to be the loudest that building has ever been during Monday’s Vikings-Packers game and the Playoff against the Tigers).
Headlines:
-Since you probably didn’t notice, the Twins Front Office did something uncharacteristic of themselves last week, signing the #1 International baseball prospect out of the Dominican Republic, SS Miguel Angel Sano for the second largest bonus given to a prospect in team history, at $3.15 million.
-The Star Tribune’s Joe Christensen gives you “Three Things to Know About the Tigers” going into their Tuesday night playoff.
-Sid Hartmann re-examines the trade for Outfielder Delmon Young given his recent power output in helping the Twins get to this point. (just wanted to say, I’ve always defended Young despite how he was playing earlier in the year)
-The Detroit Free Press’ Michael Rosenberg takes a look at the current state of the Tigers.
