I had a post started entitled, “Will a Real GM, Please Stand Up,” then boom, one did. Something like this needed to be done.
It may not be all that flashy, and still ignored some other problems, but this was a deal that was a no-brainer since it was there. Which is evidence of a GM doing something right.
The cost for Oakland Athletics SS Orlando Cabrera (and cash) was only current low-level minor leaguer, and lasts years 2nd round pick, prospect Tyler Ladendorf.
I have no doubts that Ladendorf is a good prospect, reports even mention that GM Bill Smith was reluctant to trade him, but in the case of a push for the playoffs and the 2009 Twins, this was something for nothing.
Naysayers will mention that Cabrera has only recently gotten hot, and is a worse fielder. I would tell them that Cabrera also hasn’t batted in front of the M & M boys in Oakland, has produced double what Nick Punto, Alexi Casilla, and others have for the Twins thus far, and that he’s a former Gold Glover, as recent as 2007.
Something for nothing, to replace metaphorically nothing.
and glad to not be hearing press conferences explaining that “We tried” for once.
